This blog is dedicated to compiling information about the ancestors and descendants of John Forsyth who was born in Dirleton, East Lothian, Scotland in 1835. He came to Canada about 1855 (perhaps with his brother, Charles) and appears in the 1861 Census in King Township, York County.
There is a John Forsyth in St. Andrew's Ward in Toronto in 1853 city records. He is a teamster, but no age is given; therefore, it is impossible to confirm that this is our ancestor.
By the mid 1860s, our John Forsyth had married and taken his young family to the wilderness of Macaulay Township in Muskoka where he was employed in road building for several years.
His parents, John and Charlotte Forsyth, sister Alison, and youngest brother, Robert, immigrated to Canada after 1861, as they are in the Scottish census for that year. In the 1901 Census, Robert gives his immigration date as 1863. Alison married in Muskoka about 1865 and lived close to her parents and brother John. The other brothers, Charles and Robert, lived in the Toronto area. It is thought that some of Charles' descendants moved to the American Mid-West.
